The identity of the only suspect in the prison attack which left the notorious 'Son of Sam' killer David Berkowitz with a slashed throat has finally been revealed.
William E. Hauser, a 63-year-old currently serving time for beating a man to death with a rolling pin, has been identified as the likely culprit behind the attack.
Despite having his throat slashed with a razor, Berkowitz somehow managed to survive.

Hauser's identity was revealed by former Attica superintendent James Conway, who at the time worked as a corrections officer at the infamous facility.

Conway told the New York Post that Hauser - who at that time was behind bars following a first-degree assault conviction - had been moved to the same special housing unit as Berkowitz after witnessing a murder in the prison yard.
'[Hauser] did not get along well with his peers. He did not get along well with security staff. He was very abrasive,' said Conway.
Berkowitz - who is described as a 'model inmate' by Conway - was distributing water to the other prisoners in his unit when the incident occurred on July 10, 1979.
Conway said that just a few days prior to the incident it appeared that Hauser had been handed something through a window while in the prison yard.
Hauser was searched by the guards, but they were not able to find anything on him.
'It could have been the razor that slashed David Berkowitz. The guards frisked [Hauser], but they couldn’t find anything,' said Conway.
Conway also pointed out the fact that Berkowitz's throat was slashed outside of Hauser's cell, and that Hauser was the last prisoner on the line to receive water from the man.
The razor however was never recovered, and Berkowitz was too afraid to cooperate with the investigation.
Berkowitz was also very lucky to be alive following the attack, which Conway believes was a vigilante act in the eyes of Hauser.
'It was a pretty gaping wound. I think it would not have bothered Hauser if he had killed Berkowitz — 'Hey, I’m the guy who took out the Son of Sam,' said Conway.
As for the razor, Conway thinks Hauser may have flushed it down a toilet.
Hauser was never charged, and is up for parole next year for his most recent offense.
Berkowitz, now 62, is currently serving six life sentences for his 1976 - 77 killing spree in New York City.
He was convicted of killing six people and indicted for eight shootings, as he also left some of the victims who managed to survive his attacks severely wounded.
Some believe that he may have been responsible for more murders.

Berkowitz - who began his killings in the summer of 1976 and was eventually captured by authorities in August of 1977 - terrorized the city leaving millions in fear as he committed his random attacks while also sending letters to the police mocking there inability to catch him in which he called himself the Son of Sam.
Residents of the city became afraid to leave their homes after dark, with panic reaching a fever pitch in July of 1977 during the New York City blackout.
He would later say that he was forced to commit these massacres because his neighbor Sam's dog Harvey told him to do so, this after the dog had been possessed by a demon according to Berkowitz.
Despite this claim, and his lawyers attempts to prove that he was mentally incompetent, it was determined that he was fit to stand trial.
In the years since some have questioned whether Berkowitz was in fact responsible for all the killings, and the case was briefly reopened in 1996.
Berkowitz also changed his motive for the murders while in prison, saying that he had actually been part of a Satanic cult that planned the attacks as a form of ritual killing.

He first became eligible for parole in 2002, and wrote a letter to New Yorker Governor George Pataki asking that his hearing be denied, stating that he deserved to be in prison.
Berkowitz - who is now a born again Christian - has had all subsequent parole hearing denied since writing that letter.
He will next be considered for parole in 2016, and is now incarcerated at the Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg, New York.
